As expected, the July of 2010 light rail ridership numbers took a bit of a dive in July as the temperatures heated up. Like many months, there are some interesting insights when looking at these totals. While the average daily boardings were down, the average Sunday / holiday number was the highest yet for the year.
Totals look like this:
Total Boardings for July: 858,404 vs. 942,154 in June
Avg. Weekday Boardings: 26,635 vs. 35,315 in June
Avg Saturday Boardings: 24,321 vs. 24,370 in June
Avg Sunday / Holiday Boardings: 22,894 vs. 16,938 in June
As you can see, the weekends are pretty popular and the recreational rider continues to take advantage of riding the METRO in large numbers. This past month saw a lot of activity for light rail riders heading to events, sporting activities and more. Yeah, I know… The Diamondbacks haven’t been setting attendance records but people still love riding the METRO to the ball park. The curiosity factor of checking out what was once a lake may have brought a few people out, as well.
For August, we can expect to see ASU students back on the trains in larger numbers. Welcome back Sun Devils!
