The METRO public art program allowed 28 artists to create unique, station specific creations to enhance the look and feel of our light rail stations. It has been quite a while since I mentioned these works of art, but I find many of them very interesting.
Back in December of 2008, before the grand opening, there was a celebration ride for artists to show off their work and for some of us to have the opportunity to ride the entire 20 mile stretch of light rail for the first time.
This “pic of the week” is a large piece of artwork at the Central and Camelback station. Looking through the artwork, you can see the light rail station in the background. From the METRO light rail site we learn:
“The sculpture, called Landmark, is a massive 24-foot ring of desert stones framing the transit center access drive and Central Avenue itself. Through it, a line of abstract figures crosses a monumental threshold in an endless march, creating a feeling of motion and infinity.”
Make sure and pay attention to some of the unique pieces as you travel through our “city within cities.”
Remember, Rail Life has a Phoenix Light Rail Group on Flickr. Basically, we want to share some of our pictures from the community and allow people to add their pics (or videos), as well. These can be light rail related, but we also want pics of your favorite spot, restaurant, sports team, community, event etc.
I remember seeing this in person it’s beautiful. A lot of work has gone into the site but it makes it nice for visitors like us thank you.

Hey! That’s a Stargate!!
Yeah, that is the stargate… Why doesn’t the artist call it “Stargate Arizona”. We better get more security to protect this weapon from getting into the wrong hands. 🙂
