Tear Down These Walls

September 25, 2009 by Nick Bastian 9 Comments

Ever seen a building implosion? In Arizona, it is not an every day occurrence.

If you live near 3rd Street and Earll, you will either see or hear one! This Sunday, September 27th, the old Mountain Bell Building is scheduled to come down.

There will be road closures in the area between 9:30am and 10:30am. Several area residents have concerns over safety and I have been told there will be ( or has been ) a “reverse 911” call to notify people as well as other neighborhood awareness efforts. I believe the implosion is scheduled for 1o:00 and should only last a few seconds.

“The building will be imploded on two floors. This will severe the steel structure and allow the building to fall away from 3rd Street.”

Residents and shop owners within the vicinity are asked to close their windows, turn off their a/c units and other air intakes as a precaution to keep dust out of their homes. They do not anticipate any problems with health, safety or any issues with utilities in the area.

Located just East of Central Avenue and between the Thomas and Osborn light rail stations, I thought it sounded like something kind of cool to watch. While traffic closures will be in place, it should be really easy to take the light rail if you want to see the event for yourself.

At a recent Midtown Museum District Neighborhood Association meeting, we were given some details of the implosion and learned that a company called “Advanced Explosives Demolition” would be the ones to get to play with explosives in the city. I do have an information packet that can be emailed if you want a copy. Just leave a comment here and I’ll send you one.

There was also this article on AZ Central that you might find interesting and has more specifics than I have listed here. Please take a look. If you are going to go check it out, don’t be an idiot, stay behind the lines.

** Update 9/27/09** video from today’s demolition thanks to “1974BikeBoy” on YouTube.

Please email me a copy of the information packet. We are planning to come down and watch the demolition. I emailed the company this morning, and they confirmed that the event would take place at 10AM. I hadn't thought about taking Light Rail – that's a great idea, so I'm glad I saw your post!

I hope you guys get some good video – not sure I'm going to make it down there in time – but I do want to see it and the local news sucks for video footage

That is a good quality video capture. I watched it happen from the roof of a parking garage looking straight east. I've posted a video from my angle on my blog. Nice post, I found it very informative! 🙂
