Poker Run on the Light Rail!

May 25, 2009 by Nick Bastian 4 Comments

The first annual "Poker Run On The Rail" benefiting the American Cancer Society is happening this Saturday, May 30th! A "poker run" is kind of like a scavenger hunt in that, there will be seven places to visit. All of the “mystery stops” will be announced the day of the event. At each participating venue along the line, an official will give participants a card that will be marked as their own. At the end of the day, the person with the best hand wins the $500.00 grand prize! According to my new friend Steve, other prizes to be given away will be a GPS system, guitar hero, restaurant gift certificates, free golf, etc.

At Rail Life, we are always looking for fun things to share with you. When I first heard about this event I thought, “Wow, this sounds really cool!” Today I spoke with Steve, one of the organizers of the event, and he told me all about it and how all the proceeds will benefit the American Cancer Society. Each of us has probably been effected by Cancer at one time or another and we all like to have fun, so why wouldn’t we want to join in!?!?

From their web site, we found the following information:

Players will sign in starting at 9:30 am at the Hotel San Carlos ( 202 North Central Avenue which is just south of the light rail stations at Central and Van Buren and at 1st Ave and Van Buren) Players will be given a Scorecard, a Map an Event Schedule and a light rail pass. There are 7 stops including the San Carlos. Participants may begin their journey at 10:30 a.m. Players decide how they want to spend their day, and which stops they wish to make 1st. Many stops will be offering drink and food specials to our players.

At each stop, one card will be drawn from a bag containing one full deck of playing cards (52cards). The Poker Stop Event Staff Monitor will place a unique mark on the scorecard along with the rank and suit of the card drawn. The playing card will then be returned to the bag. The participant is then free to proceed to the next stop.

After the last stop, the players will proceed to the Copper Door Bar located in the Hotel San Carlos. Before turning in the scorecard, players will be given the opportunity to purchase one additional card. The card will be drawn from a bag the same as the poker stops and be recorded by Event Staff. The best 7 cards will be used from the scorecard for ranking.

Registration is available up until the day of the event, but early registration is greatly appreciated. All info can be found on the poker run web site. Please note, the last day for registration has been extended for us! Don’t delay!

Poker? Playing cards? Hypnotized. We can totally ride with other participants too right? Take pics .. have merriment? If it doesn’t interfere with UmpUmp’s concert that evening – I’m in.
