Metro Light Rail Grand Opening – Go Green!

December 16, 2008 by Rail Life Leave a Comment

The city of Tempe is doing a GREAT job in planning for the Grand Opening events scheduled for December 27th. Rail Life was sent a cool press release today encouraging people to "go green Dec. 27 by using an alternative mode to get to the Destination Tempe Light Rail Grand Opening."

More interesting info concerning the Destination Tempe celebrations for the opening week of light rail are: Tempe Rail Rewards gives prizes for lucky people riding the first two days of rail service. Then comes the Insight Bowl and Block Party with college football and one of the 10 best New Year’s Eve Celebrations in America.

TEMPE, Ariz. – The city of Tempe Transportation Division, Tempe in Motion, will offer many alternatives to driving to get to the Light Rail and Transportation Center Grand Opening Celebration on Saturday, Dec. 27. Residents are encouraged to ride the bus, bike or park at any several park-and-ride lots along the light rail route.

The Tempe Bicycle Action Group will operate a free bicycle valet service at the Tempe Transportation Center located at 200 E. Fifth St..
Bicycles will be securely parked and monitored. The bicycle valet will open at 9 a.m. and all bicycles must be picked up by 5:30 p.m.  Overflow bicycle parking will be available at Sixth Street Park and Tempe Mission Palms. Please bring your bicycle lock in the event the valet parking reaches capacity.

Pre-registration is strongly encouraged to help Tempe Bicycle Action Group estimate demand. Pre-registrants will be eligible to win one of several bicycle related prizes via a random drawing on Jan. 3, 2009. For more information about Tempe Bicycle Action Group or to pre-register for the bike valet, please visit www.biketempe.org.

Another transportation alternative is to hop on any one of the five free neighborhood circulator Orbit routes.  Buses run every 15 minutes from 6 a.m. to 10 p.m.  Or, load up the car with family and friends and park at any one of the 10,000 parking spaces in the Downtown Tempe/Mill Avenue District. For more information about parking in Downtown Tempe,
please visit
www.tempe.gov/parking.

Rail Life wants you to enjoy the Opening Day Festivities. Don't forget to plan ahead and to think about what to expect on opening day as it will be a huge celebration with the potential for very large crowds. If you are able to walk, bike or take a bus to the festivities, you just might be glad you did. Take advantage of the Park and Ride lots but remember, some of them are sure to fill up. METRO will be providing shuttle bus service at each stop to help move people that might want to get back to their original destination. (light rail stop)

Enjoy this historic day! When heading down there, remember to go green and remember that "Your Life Is On The Line!"
