We have talked about the fact that the Grand Opening weekend for Light Rail will be a huge event in the valley. On December 27th and 28th, the public will be able to ride the light rail cars for free. Tens of thousands of people are expected to check out the festivities and ride on this historical weekend. Recently, Mesa announced information about their plans for a December 27th celebration from 10:00 am to 6:00 pm at Sycamore / Main street which is the end of the line in Mesa. The Cities web site has a page for the Mesa Light Rail Grand Opening Celebration that says they will be updating us with more information in the future. Currently, they mention the following:
It may only be a mile, but It All Starts Here! Be a part of this historic event–the celebration of one of the biggest transportation projects Arizona has seen since the opening of the first freeway. And, not only is Mesa welcoming a light rail station, we are also introducing new bus service and re-routing some buses to service the light rail connection.
The Tempe Grand Opening Celebrations for Light Rail will be the 27th and 28th. Phoenix has a ton of plans in the works (so I have been told) and we will add more information as we become aware. If anyone hears of more stuff we could share with people, please feel free to let us know. Thanks!
