There was a lot of excitement surrounding the down town Phoenix "live wire" test this morning as a light rail car made it's way up Central Avenue for the first time. The media covered the event well and the areas first light rail test was a huge success.
If you feel like celebrating the success of the project so far, you should join Metro for a party on Saturday (the 12th) at the southeastern corner of 19th Avenue and Camelback from 10 am to 1 pm. (the party will be in the park-and-ride lot)There will be a large tent providing shade along with a hose hooked up to a fire truck to cool people off. Better yet, they will have food, drinks, music and drawings!
There have been several other celebrations along the routes as areas finish different phases of testing. But.. "you ain't seen nothing yet!" December plans to be the time for the BIG party! Metro anticipates having nearly 250,000 people come out to see opening weekend December 27-28 and ride the cars for free. Several events are in the planning stages and we will try to provide more information as it becomes available. The first "fare service" day for light rail will be the 29th.
