One of my all time favorite restaurants is Monti’s La Casa Vieja. I can recall going there as a young boy in the 70’s when our family enjoyed many meals together. I still love going there every chance I get.
** Update: As of October of 2014, the famed Monti’s La Casa Vieja has been sold. We will miss them, for sure.
Monti’s is great for lunch, dinner or happy hour with friends. They also have great deals on food and drinks before each ASU football game. Some of my favorites are their prime rib and the Full Monti burger. The Full Monti burger has smoked bacon, cheddar and pepper jack cheeses and onion rings. Seriously, give it a try!
Rich in history, “The Old House” was built in 1871 by Tempe founder Charles Trumbull Hayden. His son, Senator Carl Hayden was born in “the old house” and the history of this cool old building is truly amazing. In 1954, Leonarn Monti bought the Casa Vieja and began selling steaks April 23rd of 1956.
Locals and tourists alike enjoy great food at Monti’s. Steaks, chops, seafood and their world famous rosemary-scented Roman bread, a family recipe, are served seven days a week.
Monti’s is located at Mill and Rio Salado, just north of the Mill Avenue light rail station and right across from the iconic Hayden Flour Mill.

Take a few minutes to look at some of the pieces of history that are on the walls at Monti’s La Casa Vieja. Photos, trophies, guns from the wild, wild west and all kinds of cool stuff. Heck, ask your server about the last time he or she has seen or heard of a ghost in the building. Once you get your fill of the cool history, enjoy your meal in one of Tempe’s finest treasures…
