REBarCamp Phoenix – A Social Media and Technology Extravaganza

March 31, 2009 by Nick Bastian 16 Comments

REBarCamp Phoenix is not like any traditional conference most people have ever been to. In fact, it is billed as an “un-conference” where the agenda is created by the attendees the day of the event.

Having attended the very first Real Estate BarCamp in San Francisco and another recently in Seattle, I can tell you this format is an amazing way to connect with people who really know technology and social media, and it is a great way to learn in an open, hands-on environment.

REBarCamp is FREE and will be held April 23rd at Scottsdale Stadium which is centrally located at 7408 E. Osborn Road (Northeast corner of Osborn and Drinkwater) Scottsdale, AZ 85251. This beautiful venue is a perfect setting for BarCamp where we have over 4000 square feet of available meeting space. “Breakout” sessions will be held in several different rooms where topics can range from:

  • Social networking  “what and why.”
  • Blogging (basic to advanced)
  • Google Adwords / Pay-Per-Click
  • Using Twitter effectively
  • SEO strategies
  • Podcasting and video blogging
  • Link building and the power of inbound links
  • Analytics (understanding where your traffic comes from)
  • Blog and web site platforms
  • Marketing with Statistics
  • Baby steps, where and how to get started

I am really glad to be a part of the volunteer group and sponsorship team for this event. Over the past couple of years, I have met some really great people from the ‘re.net‘ and have learned a lot from them. While this event may not appear to be directly related to the normal things we cover here, ( life along the light rail line) it does have to do with marketing, community awareness and social media – these are things that I happen to be very interested in. 🙂

Who should attend? ANYONE in the real estate, mortgage, title or affiliated businesses, people with an interest in technology and social media, business owners, etc, etc.

Why attend? It’s fun, FREE and educational. Some of the best minds in the business are attending and will be sharing a TON of great information.

Why sponsor? This is one of the best sponsorship opportunities available for people in and around the real estate industry. For as little as $250.00, mortgage companies, title companies, inspection and appraisal companies, technology companies, etc. can be associated with this incredible event. Our current sponsorship list is great, but we have ideas for some more fun things and need additional sponsors to join the team. Our current list is as follows. (BIG thanks to all of them!)

  • ML Broadcast
  • Active Rain
  • Altos Research
  • Diverse Solutions
  • FLEX MLS (FBS)
  • Zillow

  • If you want to learn more about BarCamps, I am enclosing links to some others who have some great information to share about them:

Jay Thompson from the Phoenix Real Estate Guy blog.

Steve Belt wrote, “You don’t want to miss it”

John Hall & Associates wrote about BarCamp,

Remarkable Media and Marketing gives an explanation:

Our friends at Dakno Marketing made this really cool map of where BarCamps are being held.

Last, but not least (I could go on for far too long) my friend, Stacey Harmon describes some  Los Angeles BarCamp thoughts.

Please feel free to join all of us at this fun event! Your RSVP is greatly appreciated!

Did somebody say SEO? I should come to learn a little about SEO… I’ve heard of that but… what is it again? 😉

You’re absolutely right about REBarCamp-Phoenix, Nick! April 23rd is destined to be a day of great synergy and great minds. It’s the perfect opportunity for beginners and experts alike. How often are we given the opportunity to learn from the “greats” of our industry – for FREE?!?! Seriously! Real estate geek or not, all are welcome to attend. See you there!

I’ve been to a LOT of real estate conferences and training classes. Spent a pretty penny doing so.

The two RE Bar Camps that I’ve attended have, BY FAR, been the best of the lot.

      And it’s free.

ANYONE remotely connected to real estate — be they agents, brokers, lenders, title companies, inspectors, stagers, whatever — would be foolish not to attend this.

Heck, even if you are not in real estate but are into marketing, blogging, social media, PR, etc you should attend.

Trust me, you don’t want to miss this.

This is going to be my first barcamp and I am looking forward to it. Not only a great location, but being held in the center of the real estate blogging universe there should be a lot of quality people to learn from.

This will be my first RE Bar Camp experience and I can’t wait. The amount of real estate marketing/social media knowledge and expertise that is going to be participating is massive and I will have the ability to tap into that knowledge and get my questions answered for free at RE Bar Camp.

And it is at Scottsdale Stadium, in a ballpark!

How could I not take advantage of this opportunity?

      I will be there!

Nick… I wish I could make the trip from Los Angeles for this one. I love the REBarcamp format to begin with, but this looks like it’s going to be a home run. Unfortunately, my wife will be in Africa and I’m don’t to leave the kids.

I will be following along from home and adding any value I can via the web!!!

I have had the pleasure of attending BarCamps in San Francisco and New York and these are not your “usual” conferences. They are participatory events where attendees can host a group discussion on a topic of their choice.

BarCamps are very informal but highly educational (and fun). Where else can you rub shoulders with (and pick the brains of)net vets like Jay Thompson?

And you are right, Nick. BarCamps are great for EVERYONE connected with the industry. The folks there can flatten the learning curve for those new to the online venues. This is one of the great benefits of the re.net– people sincerely interested in sharing and helping one another learn and succeed. Well worth the free price of admission.

Having attended the San Francisco Bar Camp, I can confirm that the event was an amazing coming together of diverse, and yet like-minded people. Connections were made. Ideas were hatched. The event was electric.

Phoenix is known to be a center of real estate bloggers and a social media magnet, so the Phoenix RE BarCamp will be a must-attend event! Come to listen, learn, and share.

REBarCamps are a “must” for anyone in the Real Estate Industry. Where else can you participate and ask questions and be involved with leaders in the industry?

These “unconferences” are like nothing I’ve attended before – with sessions about the latest marketing trends and ideas that will take your business to the next level. I’ve attended 2 REBarCamps (San Francisco and New York) and now working in organizing one in Miami in September – you walk out of there with a wealth of knowledge and energy to act (and the networking is not bad either) 😉

I liked Jeff’s baseball reference so much a decided to bust out a Grammy award winning song. No big deal.

      (throat clearing – ready GO)

Take me out to the BarCamp, take me out with the crowd. Don’t buy me anything, because it’s free. I don’t care if I ever come back. Let me root root root for the people that decided to take some time out of their busy schedules to learn more about technology and marketing, if they don’t win it’s a shame. It’s on 4, 2, 3 at the park, if you don’t come then you’re lame.

      Thank you.

This is going to be awesome!

It is about time that we can actually have one of these close enough to drive to – no plane hopping this time.

For everyone who has been to a REBarCamp, you know this one will be great. For anyone who this will be their first REBarCamp, well… just take our word for it — this one will be great!

      See you there.

If you miss RE BarCamp Phoenix, but could have been there. If you knew about it, and for some reason decide not to go, afterward you are going to regret it. This will be THE real estate event in Phoenix that _every_ real estate related person MUST attend. This will be the “remember when…” water cooler talk for months, if not years.

Even if you don’t get it right now, as you read this post and the comments, trust me, you don’t want to miss it. If you wait until you “get it”…It just might pass you by.

We just wrapped RE BarCamp Los Angeles – what fun it was! Full of amazing networking and learning opportunities. There is no better way to meet the best of the RE.net world and figure out how all this “technology stuff” can help you grow your business. I’m looking forward to attending REBCPHX in a few weeks!
