While reading this morning's email blast from the Desert Botanical Garden, we came across this announcement regarding a free shuttle service. Since this has certainly been one of our most frequently asked questions (How do I get to ….?), it's definitely worth passing along.
APS Creates Link Between Light Rail and Desert Botanical Garden
The Desert Botanical Garden is pleased to announce the inauguration of
shuttle service connecting the Garden with the Valley Metro Light Rail
system. Funded by a generous grant from APS, the shuttle will run from
9 a.m. to 7 p.m. daily between the Priest/Washington station of Valley
Metro Light Rail and the Garden's entrance. There is no cost to ride
the shuttle.
The first pick-up of the day is at 9 a.m. in the
parking lot of the retail center at the northeast corner of Priest and
Washington. The last return trip to the Light Rail station leaves the
Garden at 7 p.m. The shuttle will make the round trip twice each
hour. Both locations will have signage easily identifying the pick-up
sites.

This sounds like a promising development. Prior to this shuttle, the only way to reach DBG via public transit was bus route 17, along McDowell Road, which is too slow and gritty for many of the DBG’s target customers. It might make sense for this shuttle to serve the Phoenix Zoo as well, since many customers may prefer a dedicated shuttle over tranferring to Valley Metro bus route 1, which terminates the zoo. Regardless, My guess is that the Starbucks and other restaurants in the retail plaza may see increased business from people waiting for the shuttle.
David, another near by attraction is spring training baseball. I hope they can add that as well. 🙂
Funny, I was also thinking about the benefits to the center at the corner. What a great opportunity for them.
