We just got this release from Metro and wanted to pass it along. I think the free ride week has been busier than many people expected. We knew the weekend would be crazy but this week has proven to be busier than I expected. This is probably good news for the system as people appear to be enjoying the rides. After the first of the year, it will be very interesting to watch the numbers..
METRO is thrilled with the response to its free-ride days occurring Dec. 27 – 31. We want everyone to come out, explore the system and see how it fits into their transportation needs.
To help you navigate the popularity of the free-ride days, please note the ends-of-line at 19th Avenue/Montebello in Phoenix and Main/Sycamore in Mesa are by far the busiest areas, including park-and-ride lots that are filled to capacity at certain times of day.
If you encounter a lack of parking, please consider use of the below park-and-ride facilities. Parking will likely be available and typically, the train queue lines are shorter at these locations.
19th Avenue / Camelback
410 total spaces
38th Street / Washington
189 total spaces
Dorsey Lane / Apache Blvd
190 total spaces
McClintock Drive / Apache Blvd
300 total spaces
Price 101 Freeway / Apache Blvd
693 total spaces
Remember, there is a light rail map where you can see the locations. This might help you plan your trip a little easier.
Thanks Nick!
I am downtown Phoenix right now in the Arts District and the trains are running about every 5 minutes. They are not packed but they are full.
We should also tell people about not crossing the tracks except at designated crossings. About 30 minutes ago I saw a woman try to cross the rail in front of a train. If she would have slipped getting up the curb she would not be alive today.
This might be a moot point since tomorrow is the last day of the free rides, but unless you absolutely have to, folks might want to chill on bringing their bikes on the metro.
I’ve seen things being a bit too busy for people to squeeze their velos on amidst all the bodies.
It definitely will be interesting to see what having to pay a fare and people getting back to regular school and work schedules will do to ridership.
