A lot of people wonder how the fare system will work once the light rail trains begin to run in December. Basically, a ride (bus or light rail) is going to cost most people $1.25 and an all day pass is just $2.50. There will be other options available. For instance, you can purchase a 3, 7 or a 31 day pass, the 31 day pass is just $45.00. This is probably a great option for people that live, work, or "play" along the line. One note about those who go to school near the line.. ASU students will be given a free light rail "U-Pass as part of their tuition! How cool is that?!? Light Rail will be a huge benefit for ASU students.
Ticket Vending Machines (tvm"s) will be available for purchasing your light rail pass. The fares are enforced by an "honor system" with random ticket checks aboard trains by employees. Serious folks, no cheating allowed! I understand that you can also buy your fare on line, through the mail, at transit centers etc.
I was glad to be able to shoot this short video where Gary Flunoy from Metro spoke about the subject. As we get closer to December, I am sure Metro will be giving out more information. I'll let you know if I hear anything else..
Nick,
The fares seem very reasonable. A question: Are there sites along the rail line for commuter (car) parking lots? I’m thinking of those along the BART in SF, or the Metro in DC. That would likely GREATLY increase ridership, right from the start!
Hi Vance. Yes, there are 8 different “Park and Ride” stations. Some as large as 700 spaces. I will probably be writing about them in the near future. 🙂 The entire system has gone through some pretty intense planning.
Hi Vance,
I am one of the developers at Rail Life. We should have the park-n-ride locations published on our interactive map found at http://www.raillife.com/Map/Light-Rail-Map.aspx. We are still developing this, but the locations should be out there in advance of the opening of the light rail line. We hope to have driving directions to each of the park-n-ride locations from an address that you supply. Hopefully this will help the community utilize the light rail system to a greater degree. We know that any kind of confusion will decrease ridership so we plan to make it as clear for people as possible to find information out about the light rail include directions to the park-n-ride locations.
I hope this helps!
Kelly

I can’t find anything on this issue.
How does light rail accomodate people with bicycles? This includes numerous students and people trying to “go green”.
We need our bicycles at our destinations, too.
Buses let us take our bikes with us.
Jack, there are many ways for people to use bikes via Metro. Each of the cars have bike racks as do park and ride lots.
You can use the search function on the top right corner of this blog for more info.
