Railgating Change of Venue – Let’s ROCK Studio 5C is a post from: Rail Life

Just a heads up that our railgating party before, during and after the ASU vs. Oregon State will be changing venues this week and will be held at the super-cool Studios 5C at 5th and College. If you have never joined us at a 5C event, you are seriously missing out. It’s one of the coolest places in all of Tempe to be for ASU football games. BIG thanks to my friend, Greg Taylor for allowing us to team up for what is sure to be a LOT of Sun Devil fun.

The map below shows where Studio 5C is located. Basically, it is south of the light rail station at the Sun Devil Stadium and is directly above the world famous Dave’s Electric Brewpub.

The ASU vs Oregon State game is THIS Saturday, October 1st at 7:30PM. We will be starting at least a couple of hours before game time. :) Food, drink, college football. It really doesn’t get much better than that!

A Blackout Is Coming is a post from: Rail Life

This Friday, September 9th ASU welcomes the Missouri Tigers to Sun Devil Stadium for their first "Black Out" game of the year. All fans are encouraged instructed to wear black as ASU debuts its all black uniforms and helmets.

I don’t want to hear any whining about black uniforms in AZ. The fact is the sun will have gone down and the color of your shirt won’t make any difference. Besides, you will look cool for a nationally televised ESPN football game.

The students, fans, team and coaches are pumped for this BIG game so make sure to be there, be loud, and wear BLACK!

This Black Out game is also the first official “RailGating” party of the season. If you will be in Tempe, please feel free to join us a few hours before the game as we begin our pre and post game fun. We will be at 101 E 6th Street with our good friends from Smokin’ Aces BBQ! Come enjoy some good great food and a lot of fun with friends. The “RailGating” map below will show you how to get there. If taking METRO, just head South on Forest Street from Sun Devil Station until you get to 6th Street and then head one block west. Remember, even if you don’t have a ticket to the game, you can come hang with us before and after! Want to try some of the BEST dang BBQ in the history of meat? Come check out the mad skills of Kevin Hardin, your mouth will thank you.

RailGating Info For Black Friday is a post from: Rail Life

So, today is the last home game of the year for the Sun Devils and the season that could have been marches on. Thanks to some new faces and to some of the best BBQ around, our RailGating fun has been awesome this year.

For Black Friday, we have decided to change the location of our RailGating festivities, and we will be joining GRT2 Studios for a little bit of food and fun before ( and during ) the game at the super-cool Studio 5C rooftop balcony overlooking Sun Devil Stadium.

At Friday’s game, for the FIRST TIME EVER, the legends of Arizona State University Football will be appearing together on Frank Kush Field. These ASU football legends represent the first segment of what will become the ASU Football Ring of Honor and Scholarship Society. Legendary Coach Frank Kush is going to be joined in this inaugural class by Wilford “Whizzer” White, Bobby Mulgado, Ron Pritchard, Danny White, John Jefferson, Mike Haynes, Randall McDaniel and Pat Tillman. (Pat will be represented by his longtime friends and teammates Keith Poole and Steve Bush.) At halftime, these ASU football legends will be honored, but all Sun Devil Fans are able to meet and greet them prior to the game from 11:45 AM to 1:00PM at the Sun Devil Club Tailgate in Wells Fargo Arena. So, if you aren’t joining us at Studio 5C, you might want to check out the happenings at Wells Fargo Arena. ( I’ll probably do both. )

One thing to remember as you decide to take METRO on Black Friday is the fact that they will be running a Sunday schedule.  ( 20 minutes between trains ) Yeah, I know… Boo, hiss for running 20 minutes between trains on a busy shopping and fun day of the year. In their infinite wisdom, METRO decided that Thanksgiving AND the following Friday should be a holiday schedule. I understand Thanksgiving but think Friday is pretty lame. I believe they will be running a normal light rail schedule on Saturday for those of you heading to Ice Skating at CityScape or to the Tempe Fantasy of Lights Parade.

Below is a map showing some other choices for potential fun near the stadium for people to get their RailGating groove on. Whatever you do, go to the game, cheer for the Devils, have some fun and wear gold!

Big Sun Devil Celebration Saturday is a post from: Rail Life

Ok, so the Devils are 4-5 and up next is the 8-1 Stanford Cardinals. To some, that might not sound like a combination likely to raise a lot of cheers in Tempe.

Like each week, a bunch of us will be getting together for some fun “railgating” action before the game. Instead of talking about the woulda, shoulda, coulda season the Devil’s are having, I think this will be a great opportunity to hang out and have some serious fun while remembering some of the things we do have to be thankful for. How about hanging out with good friends and some great food on a football-filled Saturday?

Another thing to be thankful for is Pat Tillman. This past Wednesday, I learned that Pat Tillman will be honored at ASU with an “on-campus salute as the Sun Devils host Stanford in Tempe” on Saturday. I don’t know of an ASU fan that isn’t familiar with what Pat did on and off of the field at Sun Devil Stadium. For sure, the dude is worth celebrating. There will also be a celebration for the undefeated ASU team from 1970.

I hope you will join us and our friends from Smokin’ Aces BBQ this Saturday as we celebrate football and fun. Our friend Kevin cooks up some *really* good grub, all we ask is for a $5.00 donation for him. For that, you get some of the best pulled pork, chicken, ribs and what ever Kevin is cooking. This could be the best deal going, anywhere! See the map below for directions as to where we will be on Saturday. The fun starts at about 2:30pm and kickoff time for the Devils is 5:30pm. Our RailGating party is at 101 E 6th Street and is just a short distance from Sun Devil Stadium. Even if you are not going to the game, you are invited to join us. All are invited!

Sun Devil Fans To Roast Some Duck! is a post from: Rail Life

Once again, we will be RailGating before the ASU football game with our friends from Smokin’ Aces BBQ. Since the Oregon Ducks are in town, we thought it would be a great time to try a new dish, and Kevin has agreed to roast up some duck for our railgating pleasure. If you haven’t joined us for the pre and post game festivities, you really are missing out. A bunch of cool people and some really great food combine to make for some seriously good times for Sun Devil fans. 

Remember, a big crowd is expected to watch the Pac-10 opener this week and we want them wearing GOLD instead of green!

Threet and the Devil’s had a tough loss last week but looked much better than the last home game where they may have played down to their competition. We all know there is no room for error this week with the Ducks in town.

Join us at 101 E 6th St before the game for some serious RailGating action. Festivities begin at 4PM! Hopefully, we can cook up a BIG win for the Devil’s tonight!

Rail Life “Flickr Pic” Of The Week – Smoke and Mirrors? is a post from: Rail Life

The “pic of the week” is from Sun Devil Stadium and I shot it as we came back to the game after halftime. Now that I think of it, this one reminds me of the Sun Devil’s first two games. At first glance, it looks pretty cool but after a closer look, it is a little fuzzy and out of focus.

ASU has a 2-0 record and has scored 95 points in their first two games. Unfortunately, they have given up a boatload of yards from 24 penalties and have some serious work to do before heading to Wisconsin for a pretty big match-up. This team has some talent, many of us just feel that some tweaks need to be made and the year will be fun to watch.

Speaking of fun, our “Railgating” crew may have been the best yet. The food was great and we were joined by a bunch of really cool people. We’ll be back in action on the 25th when ASU hosts the Oregon Ducks. In fact, I have already talked to our buddy Kevin at Smokin’ Aces BBQ to see if he can smoke us some duck for the next railgating party. Don’t miss out on that one! :)

Time For ASU Baseball With Valley Metro and Friends is a post from: Rail Life

What is more fun than a spring baseball game at ASU’s Packard Stadium? How about a FREE spring baseball game at ASU’s Packard Stadium?

Rail Life is teaming up with Dave’s Electric Brewpub and Valley Metro so that a bunch of us can enjoy an ASU baseball game on Saturday, March 20th 2010. The tickets are courtesy of our friends at Valley Metro RPTA and the good grub is courtesy of our friends at Dave’s Electric Brewpub. Beginning early next week, we will start making the tickets available so, stay tuned. You might want to leave a comment here if you want to be one of the first people to get tickets. ( hint, hint )

What’s the deal? In true Rail Life style, we want to have as much fun as possible. When the cool people at Valley Metro RPTA told me they had a bunch of baseball tickets for us to use, my fun meter immediately went ballistic. What did I do? I called my friend Christina at Dave’s and and came up with a “game plan.” Christina will graciously allow us to hang out at her restaurant before the game and even put out some appetizers for us to munch on. ( Any type of drink you choose or normal menu items will be on you. ) Basically, we have 70 tickets to give away and want to invite our friends to an ASU baseball game on March 20th. Game time is 1:00pm and we will be meeting at Dave’s for fun and food at 11:00am. *** Update! The game time is 6:30pm and happy Hour will begin at Dave’s at 4:30pm! Please join us at 4:30 for some good food and a few cold drinks! See the Rail life curve ball post for more details.***

Remember, taking the bus or the light rail to ASU is easy. Valley Metro has bus and light rail schedules on their site and the Tempe Transportation Center is visible from Dave’s! (Valley Metro’s Facebook Fan page also has more information!)

I spoke with ASU about the tickets and found out that we will be in the lawn area where we can hang out on blankets or chairs that we bring. This will be a perfect way to spend a spring game with a bunch of really cool people! ASU tells me they allow people to bring bottled water and snacks like peanuts, seeds, etc. If you have specific questions on what we can and can’t bring, please contact the ASU ticket office.

Beginning next week, I will be working with The Social Latte and with Network and Connect to come up with some fun promotions and ways for us to give away the tickets to the game, so stay tuned! It looks like RailGating is starting early this year! :-)

RailGating party of the year for ASU – UofA game is a post from: Rail Life

Leett’ss get ready to rruummmbblle!! The annual Duel in the Desert ASU-UofA football game is tomorrow and we all know it is the biggest game of the year for the Devils.

Seasons have been determined by this annual rivalry and it makes no difference who has the better record. For the Devils, it is time to leave it all on the line.

Tomorrow, “RailGating” will be at a season high peak. Everyone gets up to watch the Devils beat the Mildcats. Game time is 1:30 pm on Saturday the 28th, but the festivities will begin long before the players take the field.

As you know, this is the first year where fans have been able to “RailGate.” RailGating has become THE best way to watch a Sun Devil football game. Just leave your car at a park and ride lot, jump on the light rail and head to where the action is. This might be a restaurant, bar, parking lot to join friends, or anywhere you can cheer on the Sun Devils.

For a really great time, you should join me at the “AT&T Sparky Central” railgating party! Rail Life has been given some “exclusive” passes to this week’s bash and I’m willing to share! All AT&T customers are invited and may bring a guest to the party. But don’t worry, if you are not yet an AT&T customer, let me know and I will see what we can do about getting YOU the Rail Life treatment! (Just contact me via Twitter or click the “call me now” button on the blog!) We are told this will be catered with plenty of food AND drink for Sun Devil fans and AT&T customers.

The first Light Rail New Year’s Eve – Mill Avenue Style is a post from: Rail Life

This coming New Year’s Eve will be a historic occasion in that, it will be the first time people will be able to take light rail to and from Mill Avenue. This year, there will be a slight change to the area near Third Street and Mill because of it’s proximity to the new light rail stop. The area will be sectioned off to allow people to pay for or show their tickets to gain entry to the block party. There was once a thought of temporarily closing the station at Third Street and Mill because it would be inside of the block party. A decision has been made to keep the station open to allow people to ride light rail to Mill Avenue for the festivities. According to my friend at the City, it was the best decision and I would agree.

Speaking of the Insight Fiesta Bowl Block Party, it might just be THE place to be this year! “More than 100,000 party-goers annually celebrate in Tempe’s Beach Park and Mill Avenue District amidst spectacular fireworks displays and an official midnight countdown drop. With legendary rock band Styx headlining the event, more than 40 local bands and entertainers, beer gardens, dueling pianos, freestyle motocross jumpers and more”

Of course, prior to the Block Party, thousands (including some of the Rail Life crew!) will have already gathered (many riding the new light rail line) to see Kansas and Minnesota battle it out in the Insight Bowl at Sun Devil Stadium. Heck, if you don’t need the exercise, you can even ride the light rail from just outside of Sun Devil Stadium a couple of blocks to the Third Street and Mill Ave Station. Why not? It’s a FREE ride! :-)

After the Insight Bowl, I’ll be heading to Monti’s La Casa Vieja on Mill Avenue for dinner. I see from Michael Monti’s blog that ”Guests may purchase tickets through Monti’s for $20 each. Any guest purchasing at least 2 Block Party tickets will receive a Block Party Parking Pass that will allow them to park in the US Airways Parking garage” With the purchase of the ticket’s from Monti’s, they will be giving a discount off of your dinner of 1/2 of what you paid for the tickets. ie: You buy 4 passes for $80.00, your dinner bill is discounted by $40.00. Of course, a big part of the beauty of the light rail route is that you can now get from Mill Avenue to Downtown / Midtown Phoenix to check out some of the events planned there as well. We understand that the Clarendon is having a party as well as a bunch of other cool stuff going on. So, you can probably even do some serious party hopping if that is your thing.

Remember, parking can be a nightmare. I have a list of street closures in Tempe and a list of the Park and Ride lots for you to take advantage of. I know that Tempe is encouraging people to take the light rail to the area.

On New Year’s Eve, I’ll be having a great time and will be taking the light rail to get there. I hope to see you around! After all, this New Year’s Eve. “Your Life Is On The Line!”
