Some projects just make you say, “Wow!” One great example is CityScape in Downtown Phoenix which is why I thought it was cool to get a copy of this survey from my friends at Urban Affair. In an email from them I read;

The landscape of Downtown Phoenix is changing, and as members of the
community we have a hand in shaping the experiences available here.
We want to hear from you about a new development underway in Downtown Phoenix. Your feedback will help demonstrate the types of experiences the Downtown Phoenix community desires and supports.
Click here: http://www.surveymonkey.com/s?sm=kWiB_2buvdztkPWuDPDFu3sw_3d_3d
Please take the survey by 5PM, Friday, June 19.

In the survey, you'll find questions about where and how you like to spend your time, the types of environments you find most appealing, and about a new project taking shape in the heart of downtown. Lastly, there are some questions about you that will help in overall analysis purpose. Answering all the questions openly will help to create a downtown that serves your needs.

In case you don’t know, CityScape is a mixed-use development that is under construction in Downtown Phoenix. It will offer many uses including high-rise offices, dining, retail, a four-star hotel, high-rise condominiums and public park space with great access via the light rail. According to their web site, potential tenants include AJ's Fine Foods, CVS Pharmacy, Urban Outfitters, Gold's Gym, a new Fox Restaurant concept, and other unique retailers. The location of CityScape is as follows:

1st Avenue to the west, 1st Street to the east, Washington Street to the north, and Jefferson Street to the south. CityScape is adjacent to the US Airways Center and within two blocks of Chase Field. The Light Rail runs on three sides of the project with nearby rail stations providing easy access.

Yep, it is kind of a big deal. Take a look and let us know what you think.

Local First Arizona is an amazing organization founded by Kimber Lanning. Kimber has done a great job in helping bring awareness to what it means to purchase products from locally owned businesses. I have been meeting many business owners along the light rail line over the past several months, and the importance of shopping locally becomes more and more clear each day. I feel the relationship with these like-minded people is a win/win situation for us, for Local First, and for our community. With RailLife.com, I want to be a good resource for people to learn about the communities, shops, restaurants and “life” along the light rail line.

Kimber has a tremendous amount of knowledge of the business community along the light rail line, and we look forward to joining her in some really fun projects in the future. This relationship also allows us to expand on our desire to be the “go to” resource for everything light rail, including the events, communities and businesses along the line. Helping bring awareness to fun local events, our wonderful arts community, and locally owned establishments is a perfect fit for RailLife.com.

I first heard about the formation of a Midtown Museum District Association back in July of this year while reading Ed’s blog about Life at the ASU Downtown Phoenix Campus. In his blog, Ed described the idea for the new association as follows: “Our mission is to be a group of residents and businesses that seek to network with each other. At the same time, we seek to be an inclusive neighborhood and an urban catalyst seeking to improve the quality of life for our residents and the prosperity of our businesses. The boundaries are a bit confusing but they are:

McDowell Road to the south,

Indian School Road to the north,

1st Avenue or thereabouts (between McDowell and Thomas) and 3rd Avenue (between Thomas and Indian School) to the west, and
3rd Street to the east”

While the idea sounded interesting, I had no idea how well organized this new association would be. I was glad to learn of their inaugural meeting being held at the Fairfield Inn on Central but didn’t have a ton of expectations. What I found was two very charming, articulate and well prepared women had been working very hard and quite passionately within a community they clearly enjoy very much. Margaret Dietrich and Julia Tourville opened the meeting by telling us about the reasons behind the formation of the district and a little bit about their background. To me, it was clear that these two ladies will help make this group a huge benefit to the community. Basically, they are looking to help create a sense of community within the boundaries of this cohesive neighborhood. Margaret also spoke of the rich cultural community and the fact that the light rail line runs right through the district. In fact, there are three light rail stations within the newly formed district and another just outside of the northern boundary. Julia also spoke very fondly of the area and as another participant pointed out, it would be easy to listen to her speak at any time with that beautiful accent of hers. You should come to the next monthly meeting just to take a listen. :-)

The meeting had several very good speakers and community activists. Representatives from Council Districts 4 and 7 were on hand along with Community Action Officers from the Phoenix Police Department, local developers and small business advocates. It was also nice to see one of Metro’s outreach staff, Amy Bratt at the meeting. Amy is very friendly and informative, having her at the meeting made a lot of sense given the fact that this district is fortunate to have such great access to the light rail system. As usual, people discussed the fact that construction was hard on the businesses along the line but it is great to see the excitement for light rail as we get closer to opening day. For residents of this area or for people that want to take advantage of what this community has to offer, I highly suggest getting involved with the Midtown Museum District Neighborhood Association. These are the kind of things that Rail Life is all about. In fact, if you are a member of another association or community group along the light rail line, we would love to hear from you! Remember, “Your Life Is On The Line!” and we want to help people learn more about these great communities!

Attention, business and restaurant owners between 7th Street and 7th Avenue, Buckeye to Camelback, and along the Phoenix portion of light rail line. You have a unique opportunity to advertise your business with the help of the City of Phoenix. Recently, Mayor Gordon's office sent a letter to downtown restaurants and business owners inviting them to place a free ad in the "first ever Downtown Phoenix coupon book." Restaurants / business owners can have a photo and description of their business in this coupon book to "help strengthen a loyal customer base." In addition, restaurant owners can participate in the "Taste of Downtown" on October 16th at the new Sheraton Downtown Hotel at 3rd Street and Van Buren. The expected attendance at the Taste of Downtown is 800 people giving you an opportunity to expose your craft to a lot of very interested (and hungry) people by providing small samples of your menu items. ( prepare enough for up to 100 guests.) This promises to be a great event and a great opportunity for people to see the new downtown Sheraton!

So, if you own a business located from 7th Street to 7th Avenue, Buckeye to Camelback, or are along the Phoenix portion of the light rail line, you can submit your ad, logo and the info below to: Tiffany Huisman at Mayor Gordon's office – email the information to tiffany.huisman (at) phoenix.gov – Tiffany can also be reached at (602) 534-9514.
