Rail Life “Flickr Pic” of the week – ok to take bikes on light rail

by Rail Life on June 7, 2009

We get a lot of questions from people concerning bicycles on the light rail cars. Each of the light rail vehicles have bike racks that hold four bicycles. In fact, bicycles are very common on light rail. When taking your bike on the light rail, you might want to keep these things in mind…

  • Bicycle symbols on the train windows show you the doors nearest the bicycle rack.
  • Racks are first-come, first-served. If the bicycle rack on the train is full or you are unable to load your bicycle into the rack, you may stand with your bicycle as long as you do not block the aisle or doorway.
  • If the train is crowded, you may be required to wait for a less-crowded train before you can board with your bike.
  • You are responsible for loading and unloading your bicycle. For safety reasons, the operator cannot leave the cabin to assist you.
  • It is not hard to load your bike on a light rail car but you will want to be prepared when arriving at your destination so that you give yourself plenty of time to exit.

Most of the time, there is plenty of room for traveling with a bike. If the train is too crowded, you may be asked to wait for the next one, but I don’t believe that happens very often.

Remember, Rail Life has a Phoenix Light Rail Group on Flickr. Basically, we want to share some of our pictures from the community and allow people to add their pics (or videos), as well. These can be light rail related, but we also want pics of your favorite spot, restaurant, sports team, community, event etc.
