1st METRO accident is big news

by Rail Life on December 2, 2008

Thankfully, it appears there were no serious injuries resulting from todays accident involving an Oldsmobile and a light rail car. Unfortunately, this is probably the first of what will be many crashes concerning people and these light rail cars. Public awareness and safety campaigns from Metro can only do so much. The cars are very quiet and they do travel along some heavily populated and heavily traveled corridors. The Oldsmobile that was struck near 24th Street and Washington Street appears to have been at fault. Said a Metro spokesman, "Obviously, somebody here did not obey the traffic signal." He did stop short of calling it a stupid mistake. :-)

We knew this first one would be all over the news. Hopefully, it will bring even more awareness to the situation and people will pay attention to the trains. Please, drive, walk and play safe!

Thanks to all of the people that called, emailed, text messaged and "tweeted" me today about the light rail accident! :-)

See that big thing coming down the street. It is a train! Don’t hit it.

Just a reminder for people to look for big moving objects coming toward them when they drive.

Maybe the trains could be some sort of eye test. If you can’t see them coming then maybe you should not be driving a car!?

Anyway… all it fun. I hope she is ok!

Seriously, you know where the train is going…and that’s in the direction of the rails it rides on. Each Metro car weighs A LOT! And your car WILL LOSE in a confrontation.

Obey the signals at all times! And LOOK when you’re near the rail line…I’m amazed at how quiet these trains are! (Much quieter than the Portland MAX system.)

Safety first!

“It just had to be an Olds.”
You know, to a few of us, that’s pretty funny. Remember that little skinny kid driving the Olds? Didn’t get any cooler than that!
Thanks, man…
